Crablands Tennis Results 2024/2025
Competition matches are now complete for the Summer League and here are our results. We now have three teams in different divisions of the TDS Sussex Doubles League – two men’s and one ladies.
Congratulations to our Ladies team for finishing 3rd in their league with Jess Ackerman finishing 8th out of 72 players and Marjie Ridley finishing 9th.
Congratulations to our Men’s 1st team for finishing 4th in their league with Michael Ackerman finishing 9th out of 60 players and Andy Jenkins finishing 11th.
Congratulations to our Men’s 2nd team for finishing 2nd in their league with Dave Jones finishing 3rd out of 82 players and Nigel Allfrey finishing 4th.

OCTOBER 2024
Saturday 5th October the Junior/Senior Doubles Tournament took place with eight pairs taking part: Will Hall & Cathryn Hall, Ismay Tinkley & Charlie Bray, Ollie Carter & Dave Jones, Sophie Rowland & Michael Ackerman, Toby Pitham & Martin Green, Eddie Lamdin & Dom Lines, Archie Strange & Nigel Allfrey, Ellie Jenkins & Andy Jenkins. Weather conditions were good, if a little windy at times. Each pair played 5 games and the winners with the most wins were Eddie Lamdin & Dom Lines. It was a great afternoon of tennis with some long and exciting rallies. Thank you to everyone for taking part, for the supportive spectators, Viv for organising and providing the refreshments.

SEPTEMBER 2024
Sunday 22nd September – Club Tournament Finals Day. We had a record number of members (52) taking part in this year’s tournament culminating in a fabulous finals event with 11 finals matches being played. Our coach Dena Nelson Smith organised 3 professional LTA umpires to preside over the day with 12 junior members providing on court ball support. Mark Parrish made the chairs for our visiting umpires and delicious cakes and goodies were provided by generous members. We’d like to thank the wonderful support received from our members, families, friends and dogs. The whole day was a tremendous success. And of course, congratulations to all our finalists and everyone who took part.

22nd June our finalists Jess, Marjie, Cathryn, Charlie (Ladies) and Andy, Carl, Dan and Michael (Men) travelled to West Worthing Tennis Club to take part in the next stage of the LTA Play Your Way to Wimbledon event. Despite our valiant players not getting through, a delayed start due to the rain and playing on grass a good day was had by all and the experience and knowledge has been worthwhile.
16th June Ladies home to Billingshurst. Result 2:2. Team: Jess, Marjie, Chris, Liz. Congratulations to our team for a great morning’s tennis – crowd pleasers. And as for the refreshments afterwards – delicious.
9th June Ladies home to Grasshoppers. Result 4:0 win to Crablands. Team: Jess, Marjie, Cathryn, Charlie. Congratulations to our Ladies team for a convincing victory – exciting games to watch.
9th June Men’s 1st team home to Angmering. Result 4:0 win to Crablands. Team: Carl, Andy, Michael, Dan. Exciting win for our Men’s 1st team with a 14-12 tiebreak to Crablands in the end. Congratulations.
2nd June Men’s 2s home to Partridge Green. Result 3:1 win to Crablands – Team: Nigel, Dave, Dom, Mark. An enjoyable and exciting morning’s tennis for those who came to watch. Congratulations on another fine win. Great refreshments courtesy of the team captain.
1st June draw for the Crablands 2024 Championship League took place at the clubhouse. Huge thanks to Jess and Dena for organising the draw and to Jess for preparing the match schedules. All schedules are displayed on the tennis notice board upstairs in the clubhouse and matches are underway. Senior Presentation evening will be 16th November at the clubhouse (details to follow) when the winners of this year’s leagues will be presented with their award and their names will be added to the boards. Good luck to everyone taking part – we have the biggest number of members taking part this year – fantastic to see such participation.
MAY 2024
21st May – RNLI Charity Event. Thanks to all those members who took part in this fun and worthwhile event, in particular Carol for organising things within Crablands and Claire Wright for organising the event on behalf of the RNLI. Participating players were – Ladies 8 : Charlie Bray, Lisa, Beverley, Patsy, Penny, Ali Merrett, Carol, Liz. Men’s 4: Neil, Nigel, Henry, Pete. Nigel and Charlie went through from Crablands to play at Itchenor where the finals were played followed by a fabulous buffet. Charlie was in the finals with Antonia (another Crablands member) and despite a hard fought match, were pipped for victory. Nigel and John (a Chichester member) were the overall winners of the mens tournament – huge congratulations to them and all our players for taking part in what has now become an annual event.
18th May Ladies away to Rudgwick. Result 0:4 to Rudgwick. Team: Jess, Marjie, Charlie, Cheryl. Our team fought for 4 hours against Rudgwick with 3 of the matches going to championship tie breaks – a clear indication of how close it was.
12th May Men’s 2s home to Crawley. Result 4:0 win to Crablands. Team: Dave Jones, Nigel Allfrey, Carl Spencer, Dom Lines. Congratulations to the Men’s 2s for a fantastic victory – excellent play from all the team on a lovely warm Sunday morning with a supportive crowd.
APRIL 2024
21st April Girls 14U LTA Youth League away to Angmering. This was a first for Ellie Jenkins and Ismay Tinkley on many counts: first time playing together, first competitive event played, first time playing on astroturf and they played both singles and doubles against county standard players. Despite losing to a strong pair, they both played very well and we look forward to seeing them take part in more matches.
21st April Ladies Road to Wimbledon.
Jess Ackerman & Marjie Ridley played Charlie Bray and Cathryn Hall in the final of the LTA Play Your Way to Wimbledon event. It was a hard fought match with Jess and Marjie winning 2:0. They now progress to the County finals representing Crablands on the grass courts at West Worthing Tennis Club on 22nd and 23rd June.

MARCH 2024
24th March – Mixed Doubles Tournament. We have a record breaking 28 members take part in this years’ Mixed Doubles Tournament – starting the event at 10:00 and finishing at 16:00 – a long day with some very close fought matches. Our winners were Claire Wright and Michael Ackerman and our runners up were Carol Gilmour and Andy Gilmour. A big thank you to everyone for taking part, for all the wonderful cakes and goodies our members provided to keep the players and crowds sweet and to Viv for running the event.
We are very excited to announce that the Ladies 1st Team came third in the Ladies Doubles Division 9 L9W League 2023/24- a fantastic result with Jess Ackerman coming first in the points league with Marjie Ridley coming second. The Men’s 1st Team finished fourth in the Mens Doubles Division 8 M8W League 2023/24 and the Men’s 2nd Team finished sixth in the Mens Doubles Division 11 M11W league 2023/2024.

22nd October – Men’s 1st home to Angmering Result: 4:0 Win to Crablands. Team: Andy Gilmour, Carl Spencer, Dan Cobden, Michael Ackerman. This was the first match of the Men’s Winter League and another great victory for our team – congratulations. And a big thank you to the supporting audience.
22nd October – Ladies away to Lindfield. Result: 0:4 loss to Crablands. Team: Marjie Ridley, Patsy Allfrey, Liz Bosson, Charlie Bray. This was the first match of the Ladies Winter League and despite the result the matches were hard fought with some great rallies from our team.
21st October – Junior/Senior Competition Players: Carol Gilmour & Eddie Lamdin, Carl Spencer & Sophie Rowland, Nigel Allfrey & Ollie Taylor, Andy Jenkins & Eleanor Jenkins, Chris Marsh and Ollie Bow. This competition has not been run in a few years and we were delighted to have 5 of our Junior players taking part. The matches were all very close with some fantastic rallies and friendly banter. The winners were Carol Gilmour & Eddie Lamdin with Carl Spencer & Sophie Rowland runners up. A big thank you to Viv for organising the event and making the afternoon memorable. And of course, thank you to our members for taking part.

The Men’s first team have completed all their league matches and finished top of the league. A fantastic finish to the season and congratulations to our first team players and their captain Andy Gilmour.
Andy Gilmour is in 1st place, Dan Cobden in 3rd, Michael Ackerman in 4th and Carl Spencer in 7th place. Congratulations to our first team players.
24th September Men’s Singles Tournament
The men’s singles took place on Sunday 24th September – players: Andy Jenkins, Nigel Allfrey, Steve Hall, Carl Spencer, Dom Lines, Dan Cobden, Simon Brown, Andy Gilmour, Henry Wilkinson, Ollie Taylor, Eddie Lamdin. The winner of the men’s singles was Dan Cobden with Carl Spencer runner up. Congratulations to Dan and all the players for making it a great day of exciting tennis. And a special thanks to Marjie for providing the most delicious cake and Viv for her yummy cookies.
17th September Men’s Doubles Tournament
The men’s doubles took place on Sunday 17th September – players: Andy Gilmour, Steve Hill, Henry Wilkinson, Nigel Allfrey, Dom Lines, Andy Jenkins, Carl Spencer, Ollie Taylor, Eddie Lamdin, Dan Cobden, Mark Maidment, Roy Reynolds. The winner of the men’s doubles was Andy Gilmour and Steve Hill with Roy Reynolds and Mark Maidment as the runners up. Congratulations to all the players for making it a great day of exciting tennis.
9th September Junior/Senior Doubles Tournament
The pairings were: Wills Abbott and Cathryn Hall, Ewan Jenkins and Andy Jenkins, Lola Maidment and Mark Maidment, Clodagh Maidment and Carl Spencer, Dexter Pitham and Michael Ackerman, Toby Pitham and Roy Reynolds, Ismay Tinkley and Charlie Bray. And the winners were Roy Reynolds and Toby Pitham with Carl Spencer and Lola Maidment coming in 2nd.
What a hot day this was for the tournament, however all the participants played with great enthusiasm and skill – how our juniors have progressed – some excellent rallies and hard fought games were enjoyed by a very supportive group of spectators. Thank you to Viv for organising and providing refreshments, and Charlie for the life saving lollies.

Wooden racquets, windy conditions, and jugs of Pimms all added to a great afternoon of tennis and Pickleball. Many thanks to Viv for organising the tennis, Dena for arranging the Pickleball demo, Tony and Carol for running the bar, Jess and Marjie and Viv for providing delicious cakes, and everyone who got involved, and our supporting spectators. This was a nailbiting competition, with the closest of results – overall winners – congratulations to Charlie and Cheryl – with 19 games. We had a fantastic turnout for the tournament. An unexpected downpour interrupted play which meant not all players were able to finish.
