We had 6 mixed rinks out playing today and a great afternoon was had by all.
Sunday 8th September – Mixed friendly v Bedhampton at Bedhampton
Bedhampton is an artificial green so it took the Crablands players a while to get used to it.
We won on the 2 rinks and lost the 2 triples but an enjoyable afternoon was had by all.
A delicious tea was laid on after the match which was very much appreciated.

Sunday 11th August – Captain’s day
29 members took to the green for a very enjoyable afternoon of bowling.
We started the afternoon with a “spider” to raise funds for our charity – The British Heart Foundation.
There was lots of banter and laughter and Chris was kept busy noting down various misdemeanours which resulted in fines for quite a few players!! This raised more money for our charity. Melva organised a great raffle too. All in all we raised about £140!!
After the match we sat down to a fabulous buffet provided by all the ladies which was accompanied by punch provided by the men.
Midhurst Cup
3rd round – Monday 22nd July – semi-final v Petersfield – Sadly Crablands only won on one rink and are out of the competition.
2nd round – Thursday 27th June v Pagham – Crablands won on all rinks, both home and away and go through to the next round 80-50.

16th May – The mixed friendly v Norfolk at Norfolk was rained off.
15th May – The 1st round of the Ladies v Gents was played in sunshine with the Gents winning on three rinks and the Ladies on two. The Gents won overall, with special mention to Alan Bateman who “put on a skirt” and stood in for one of the ladies.
11th May – Unfortunately the mixed friendly away fixture v Billingshurst had to be cancelled as the men had their first round of the Top Club to play that day.
10th May – the mixed friendly v Norfolk at home was won by Norfolk with 55 points to our 37
Friday 26th April was a cold but dry afternoon for the first Club Day of the season. There was play on four rinks with the reds winning overall. We look forward to many more afternoons on the green
Saturday 20th April Crablands held an Open Day for anyone to come along and try green bowls. The day was bright and sunny with new bowlers coming to “have a go”. Many signed up for four free lessons and thus a more extended trial.
Sunday 14th April saw the season open at Crablands with over 40 members taking to the green on a cold but dry afternoon. Six rinks were full and this was followed by a meal of baked potatoes, chilli and salad. Thank you to those who helped arrange the day and the food.

Crablands mixed friendly v Dennyside at home – Wednesday 13th September
We had a visit from Dennyside Bowling Association – gentlemen who tour the country raising money for the chosen charity of clubs where they play.
We enjoyed some good bowling and every Crablands player was gifted a bowls towel, badge and pen. Dennyside won 107-100 but a great day was enjoyed by everyone.
We were so lucky to be able to host this generous Association as they raised a wonderful £1300 for our Charity of the year, Prostate Cancer. Captain of the day, Richard Green gave an excellent speech and urged all men to get checked out for this disease. Monies from a fabulous raffle, a “spider”, a “guess the shot difference” and a table collection all combined to raise this fantastic sum. Grateful thanks to everyone from Dennyside.

Southwick Park Ladies Invitation Day – Tuesday 25th July
Once again Crablands had two teams entered into this competition. It was a very enjoyable day with great food & great company. It was just a shame about the 15 minute downpour that completely stopped play.
Chris Lewendon, Julia McLaren, Val Foyle & Debs Hogg had a very successful day. They came top of their group and progressed to the final where they beat Southwick very convincingly. They came away with a very nice cash prize.

Crablands hosted SCRIBO on this glorious afternoon. SCRIBO originated as the London Bowling Secretaries Association- their members come from several different clubs and meet up to go on tours. They have come to Crablands bi-annually for a number of years but they like us so much they want to come again next year! Perhaps it was because they won?! But only by a few points. 75-71.

Crablands club member John Ballinger took to the skies recently on a dare devilwing walk in aid of charity. He raised over £800 for St Wilfred’s Hospice.Here are some photos of this crazy stunt! Apparently next year, John would like to try a wing walk whilst the plane is looping the loop!
The Summer Club Barbecue took place on Sunday 18th September and we had a great turnout. A big thank you to all the wonderful Bowls members who organised and ran the event. And thank you to everyone who bought tickets – the event was held to raise funds to pay for the Club Defibrillator.
Fullers Trophy – Sunday 18th September
The annual competition was held on a lovely sunny day with 10 ends of triples in the morning and 10 in the afternoon. The overall winners, winning both am and pm were Nigel Crump, Melva Bateman and Anita Colliety – well done you 3.

The Fullers Cup was followed by a BBQ for all sections of our Club and was very well attended and everyone “mingled” well!

A raffle in aid of our defibrillator raised a substantial amount and thanks to a special fundraiser who most enthusiastically reminded us how/when to use it.
Crablands friendly v Bedhampton at Bedhampton – Tuesday 13th September
Crablands travelled to Bedhampton on a rainy afternoon and ended up losing overall. The one success of the afternoon was the triple comprising Melva Bateman, Anita Colliety and Tony Dade who won 17-14.
Ladies v Gents – Round 2 – Saturday 10th September
Once again we were very lucky with the weather and 13 ladies plus a couple of male recruits played against 15 men and the overall winners were the Ladies with an impressive score of 126 to 81.

Crablands hosted a touring side from Hythe in Kent and were very lucky with the weather as it stayed fine and dry all afternoon. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. 24 Crablands players played against Hythe in which Crablands were the overall winners 126 to 81 points. Crablands Top Rink went to Terry Brazier, Gill Oliver, Dave Osman and John Cornwell.

Crablands Snowdrop Charity day – Sunday 21st August
The annual match in aid of the charity was played in the usual good spirits between Crablands and Chichester (ably assisted by members from Petworth) . Unsurprisingly the result was a draw – every rink drew despite copious amounts of Prosecco being consumed!
We raised over £400 for Snowdrop from a magnificent raffle presided over by Carol Reynolds and entry fees. The total was augmented by another £80 in “fines” levied by Secretary Chris Lewendon for various infringements creating much hilarity!

It was a very wet afternoon and the green was unplayable, so with the kind agreement of the Short Mat section the ladies moved inside to play short mat bowls for the afternoon. This was a completely new experience for some and something quite a few of the others had not done for many years. The afternoon was played in a very informal way and much laughter was heard. This was followed by afternoon tea with scones and cake. Thank you to all who came and joined in the fun.

The weekend was cancelled.
The committee made the decision to cancel the event due to the continued very warm weather. It was felt that it would be detrimental to our members health to bowl in the heat over the weekend.

15 players and 3 guests travelled to Windsor Great Park for a lovely afternoon of bowls.
Unfortunately Crablands lost overall by just 2 points

Midhurts Cup – Crablands v Bognor at Midhurst – Saturday 6th August
The Crablands team won the final of the Midhurst Cup. Yay!

Crablands welcomed 39 players and guests from Hook in Hampshire for a lovely afternoon of bowling.
There was a spider and a raffle which netted over £150 for our charity St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
